This prayer by John Wesley was shared at United Methodist churches the first of the year. I so appreciate the balance of this prayer. Too much of modern, popular Christianity only emphasizes the first things, not the second. If we are suffering, laid aside, and have nothing – it is perceived that God is not “favoring” us or we must have lacked faith. Woe is us. But looking at the life of Jesus and the apostle Paul, serving God may bring suffering and hardship. Jesus made himself nothing for our sake (Philippians 2:7). Certainly Jesus and Paul had strong faith. In an age of “best life now” Christianity, we need to remind ourselves often of the paradoxical nature of Christianity.
