Brief book excerpt (chapter 8):
“In John 5, Jesus rebukes the religious leaders of his day because they diligently studied the Scriptures to find eternal life but failed to see Jesus in them (verses 39-40). They missed the point, and we can easily miss the point too. Many lives have been transformed by Christ, thus faith can be a source of improvement. But it is not self-improvement, and Christianity cannot be based on a model of self-improvement. That is not what it is all about. The Christian faith is about Christ….Focusing on self-improvement feeds our natural weakness towards pride and self-sufficiency which only makes it more difficult for us to see our need of a Savior. The essence of Christianity is death of self, a new birth (John 3) into a new way of living based upon our relationship with Jesus Christ, and the on-going work of the Holy Spirit in our life.”
